There's a saying in the UK that somethings are 'Marmite' (the name of a sticky brown food paste, for those who don't know). Some people love the stuff, some people hate it. There's not really an inbetween feeling for it. This Marmite/love it or hate it feeling extends beautifully to the Human Centipede trilogy, the final installment of which is being reviewed here.

Personally, I loved the first two HC films. Yes, they were trashy, nasty, cheap and sometimes made you want to vomit a little into your own mouth, but they were also original and quirky, plus sometimes trashy and nasty aren't necessarily bad things!

Sadly, the same can not be said of the Final Sequence. Whereas Director Tom Six tried and, in the most part, succeeded to make us feel sick to the pits of our stomachs with the first two films, it seems his unquenching thirst to shock has backfired with the third film, which moves from original and nasty territory to 'meh, seen it all before but done better'. Yes, it includes its share of shocks and gore, but for the most part, Six's attempts to sucker punch us fall flat. Take for example (and I'll make it as vague as I can in an attempt to avoid spoilers) a scene where a guy stabs another guy in the side and proceeds to rape him in the wound. No doubt this was meant to be disturbing but, as I sat and watched it, I was actually thinking to myself 'Crash did the whole wound fucking thing so much better back in the late 90's ...'

In HC2, Six attempted to play with the realms of reality by making the film follow someone who was obsessed with the original and decides to re-enact it on a much grander scale, in the 'real' world. This was quite a clever twist and worked rather well, but in playing on this again in HC3 and making someone who watched the re-enactment in the second film attempt to re-enact it in their 'real' world, it just makes the whole premise dizzying and ludicrous. Six even attempts to make this film even more real-world by chucking himself in, as himself, to advise on the process of making the Human Centipede. Are you lost yet? Don't panic, the actual idea is simpler to follow and a lot less interesting!

As a fan of the original HC films, it's with a real heavy heart that I slight the final addition to the trilogy, but I guess, like The Matrix trying to cling on to its originality in a fast changing cinematic world, the only way Six could have succeeded with part 3 was to try and up the gross-out scale to 11 (a little Spinal nod there for ya!) but what we actually get is a ludicrous parody of the original films, which serves less like a end to a 'Sequence' and more like a spoof version of the original (just less Scary Movie, more Meet the Spartans!).Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8579735117841988414.post-10819799850809600952014-12-09T04:54:00.000-08:002014-12-09T04:54:31.174-08:00There's Bootleg DVD covers and then there's ...

Occasionally a film comes along that is such an absolute stinker you have to start blogging about it before it's even finished. Welcome to Gingerclown! For a start, what a God-awful title for a movie ... but I was willing to over-look that with a cast list including Tim Curry (sounding like Pennywise the Clown), Lance Henrikson, Michael Winslow, Brad Douriff and Sean Young - I mean, that's one hell of an ensemble so it can't be all that bad right? So, so wrong.

In super-speedy summary style to not waste time, a group of jocks coerce a nerd into going into an abandoned theme park to win a kiss from the head jock's girl. Obviously the theme park isn't abandoned - it's full of creatures from the underworld. That's pretty much it. What sets this film aside form hundreds like it with very similar story-lines is just how mind-meltingly awful it is! As already mentioned, the story is terrible and frankly makes very little sense. The acting (from the unknowns in the cast who also happen to play the main characters) is beyond atrocious! I'd swear that most of them must have wandered up on the first day of shooting and been given the roles without anyone actually checking they can act. As for the script, I actually found myself rewinding some scenes to hear the dialogue again as I honestly couldn't believe it could be this bad - "This whole god-damned place is the brain child of your sick mind" ...

The 'special effects' and creatures are truly laughable, they look like they belong on the set of Sesame Street, not in a horror film (don't get me wrong, I much prefer reality to CGI any day but this film actually makes me wish it had been CGI'd!). As if all that wasn't enough, every aspect of this film seems to have been covered by complete amateurs. The cast move from scene to scene and get cuts and scars, despite having not actually been in any scrapes in the previous scene. The main actress turns slowly towards the camera in (I guess) what is meant to be a dramatic moment and she turns to the side opposite to which the light on her is shining, resulting in her arm and leg being lit and her face (which I can only assume was trying to express fear or pain or anger or the need to use the toilet) is in complete darkness and the moments falls flat. At one point the director actually tries to scare us by having the actress attacked by arms in rubber gloves ... that's it. Seriously.

But, I hear you cry, what about Tim and Sean and Brad and Michael and Lance? They must help drag this turd-fest back to life?? Nope. They each have about 30 seconds in the film and only their voices over the terrible rubber puppet monstrosities. This is as blatant an example of using a big star's name to boost a film (even if they're not actually in it) as you can get!

I could literally go on and on and on about how bad this film is but I think you get the picture. Please take this post as me begging and pleading with you not to waste your time even considering watching this film. Go do something more productive like sort out your sock draw or clean the oven instead. You'll be sorry if you don't take heed!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8579735117841988414.post-84316265102088733522014-11-07T15:10:00.000-08:002014-11-07T15:10:48.470-08:00Sequel posters that were never made but absolutely should be!

Today's long overdue return to blogging sees the review of the totally bizarre and hilarious Zombeavers. 3 sorority sisters, a slut, a nerd and a cheated on bag of nerves, travel to a cabin in the woods for some R&R and time away from their significant others. Out front of the cabin is a beautiful lake with it's very own beaver dam ... but these aren't just any old beavers, these are radioactive waste mutated zombie beavers!

Okay, so if you go into this movie expecting big-budgets, oscar-worthy scripts or anything other than a good helping of T&A on show then you're going to be disappointed. If you're after bat-shit crazy puppet zombie beavers, a decent amount of skin and some so-stupid-it's-funny lines of dialogue, then you might just have picked up the right film to fill under 80 mins of your time.

This film is a proper throw-back to the ludicrous plots of the 80's and 90's when the film didn't have to make any sense, you just had to take your willing suspension of disbelief, screw it into a neat little ball and toss it in the trash, then sit back and laugh and cringe in equal measures. The effects range from poor to decent and, occasionally, actually pretty good. The third act is ludicrous and OTT but it doesn't really matter as we'd already chucked that disbelief away long ago.

Zombeavers is a great little inventive and original movie, which suffers at times from it's cliched lines and occasional slips of acting skills, but the pretty girls, screw-ball wood-chompers and easy to manage run time make up for its downsides. Zombeavers is the sort of film that will appeal to frat boys looking for something to fill a hazy evening, low budget film aficionados and those who just like something out of the ordinary.

Jonathan Glazer's Under the Skin, for the most part, follows a beautiful and mysterious young woman (Scarlett Johansson) as she travels around the streets of Scotland in a van, picking up single men and taking them back to her dilapidated home with the promise of a one night stand.

Under the Skin is truly a thing of beauty. For many it will be too slow and arty to allow them to enjoy the film but scratch beneath the surface and what you get is a slow-burning sci-fi production which is as original as it is creative and compelling. The film has gained some notoriety for including the first Ms Johansson full-frontal nude scenes but if you're watching this simply for that reason then you are missing out on so much more.

Stripping back the cloak of film-making, director Glazer uses hidden cameras, undecorated rooms and non-actors throughout much of this production but none of that detracts, rather it adds so much more to a genre that some feel has become a little stagnant of late. It's especially refreshing to see more sci-fi thrillers coming out of the UK which rise above the cliched norms we so often see.

Johansson is beautifully seductive as the mysterious woman (we never get a name for her, in fact none of the actors in the film have names assigned to their characters in the credits) and will certainly be a draw for many viewers but a large chunk of the credit has to go to the real people, suddenly finding themselves picked up in a van by Scarlett Johansson and remaining brilliantly relaxed and calm about the situation throughout!

If you're looking for something different to watch today, something without the explosions and over-the-top CGI and fast-paced action, but rather something which grows, develops and entices you to continue to watch it, then UtS will make your day.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8579735117841988414.post-52058887108330363402014-05-20T15:09:00.001-07:002014-05-20T15:09:56.625-07:00Some of the Best / Worst / Craziest films currently being touted out in Cannes!

With the glut of Superhero movies hitting the market of late, it should come as no surprise that everyone will be jumping on the band-wagon to grab a few loose dollar bills floating round. Sparks actually has more in common with Kick-Ass (than the DC/Marvel hero franchises) in terms of look and feel as well as the now oft-used 'hero without any actual powers' thread running through it. Actually, that's not entirely true, the hero Ian Sparks does actually have an uncanny ability to blackout at a moments notice!

In a nutshell, a radioactive meteorite crashes on a town in 1920's American (as a notorious serial killer is topping-up his quota of kills in the same town) creating the powerful 'Rochester 13', a group of super-powered humans. Flash forward a few years and Ian Sparks, our eponymous hero, is fighting crime with little but his fists and soon teams up with (and falls in love with) Lady Heavenly to form a crime-fighting duo. Introduce 'super-villain' Matanza to the mix and I think that's pretty much this film's description tied up in a neat little bow.

At this point it's probably worth stopping and mentioning that Jake Busey is also in this film, so you get a clear idea of exactly what you're getting!! Whilst the CGI backdrops are fairly impressive for what is obviously a low-budget film, the storyline is weak and often a little dull and the characters do nothing to allow you to sympathise or even like them. In fact this reviewer, quite regularly throughout the film, found it difficult to care at all when disaster struck this character or that.

It's pretty obvious from the beginning where this movie will eventually take us and, whilst an attempt is added to throw in a bit of a twist towards the end to prove us wrong, it only serves to make the 'big reveal' even more ludicrous and falls somewhat flat as a 'ta-da' moment.

If you're a fan of Superhero movies, this reviewer would recommend giving this a watch as an example of what can be produced on a low budget but other than that, I think sticking to Kick-Ass (not the dire sequel) or the far superior Super is the best way forward. You won't regret it!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8579735117841988414.post-1428779552826974432014-04-09T03:32:00.002-07:002014-04-09T03:32:47.762-07:00The Machine

War is imminent. China is threatening to strike every day and, in the UK, developments at the MoD are underway to create true, self-aware artificial intelligence. Computer programmers Vincent and Ava are close to creating the ultimate being but everyone has their ulterior motives for the creation of The Machine.

Made in Wales (so I was a little biased already, being from Wales), this slow-but-tense burner builds through a good amount of character development without ever disadvantaging the storyline. It creates real tension as a power struggle between good (Vincent) and evil (the Mod) who both have their reasons for making sure that the creation of The Machine succeeds. This is also the first feature from director Caradog James and shows the full range of his talents - certainly one to watch for future projects.

Caity Lotz (Arrow, Mad Men) is fantastic as Ava, bringing two different but equally enthralling roles to the film. The whole cast, in fact, work well with the script and bring life and interest to the variety of characters on show.

If you enjoy sci-fi which breaks from the norm and doesn't go straight in to the crazy action but burn away nicely to a pulsating climax then this is the film for you. Rent The Machine. Bask in the talent that the British Film Industry has to offer and hope that this can set a good example as a break away from the current run of British made 'Gangs and Guns' films that seem to be churned out a a rate of knots at present. The future is indeed bright.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8579735117841988414.post-13616424814518187902014-02-19T14:23:00.001-08:002014-02-19T14:23:10.614-08:00Trashy Trailers #16 - Zomboobies!

Obnoxious twenty-somethings. A cabin in the woods. Lots (and I mean LOTS) of political rants about war and soldiers. A quick story about an escaped soldier/convict. Escaped soldier/convict appears for little reason and kills people. Escaped soldier/convict suddenly repents his sins. The End.

Yup, nice, short and simple and sums up American Weapon (aka Blood Shed) perfectly. I just wish someone had done this for me to save me from having to watch this awful film. Well, at least I've saved you from having to watch it now, which is something. I guess.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8579735117841988414.post-11362515051668206722014-02-05T02:51:00.001-08:002014-02-05T02:51:22.030-08:00Bad Meat (2011)

6 kids are sent to a camp for delinquents to try and cure them of their unruly behaviour. Unfortunately a batch of tainted meat ends up on the dinner plates of the camp's sadistic guards, turning them into salivating monsters with a taste for human flesh. Sounds great right? That's what I thought when I sat down to watch this low-budget affair. Little did I know that what I was actually in for with Bad Meat was 90 minutes of sheer boredom and confusion.

What I found most interesting about this production was the pretty decent cast involved; Mark Pelligrino, Dave Franco, Tahj Mowry and Jessica Parker Kennedy to name but a few. All of the aforementioned cast are well known for different productions, indeed some, like Dave Franco, seem to be current flavours of the month, but this film (albeit only 3 years old) seems to have captured them all pre-fame and during a period where over-acting is the phrase that pays!

None of the cast are particularly likeable, so from the get-go you find you cannot root for anyone's survival. As previously mentioned, the acting is pretty poor across the board. For long periods of time very little actually happens (despite people dying/getting infected with goodness knows what (the reason for the bad meat is never explained)/monsters on the loose) half the characters sit around and chat and if they're not doing little they simply seems to wander round, nonchalantly walking into any room without a care for what may lie behind the closed doors.

Characters disappear with little to no explanation and the rest of the group simply carry on without worrying what has happened, the filmmakers rightly deciding that the viewing public will care little about them so why make a big deal of it in the film. By now you're probably thinking "Well, at least things can't get any worse" - Ha! How wrong you could be! Just when you think that you've devoted an hour and a half of your life to this tripe that you may as well see it out until it's conclusion, the film suddenly just ends, with no explanation as to what happened to the 5 or 6 characters that were left just a few seconds before. The director simply attempts (very badly I might add) to thrown in a 'surprise' ending and the film fades to credits and we, the viewers, are left feeling that watching that wet patch of paint on the wall drying might have been the better option after all ...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8579735117841988414.post-73394078542655226002013-12-24T07:34:00.001-08:002013-12-24T07:34:06.769-08:00Trashy Trailers #15 -The Christmas Edition!

Donald (Jackie Vernon) is sick and tired of eating the gourmet crap his wife, May, insists on cooking for him each day. Whilst his work colleagues eat cheese and baloney sandwiches, Donald has fresh prepared crab. He's had enough. All he wants is normal food but his wife, and her new microwave, continue to churn out the hated posh food until one day Donald snaps and batters May to death. Chopping her up and placing the bits into his freezer, Donald is finally free from the posh nosh ... but he then gets a surprise when he accidentally eats a piece of May; the surprise being that he actually rather enjoys what he eats! So begins the Microwave Massacre ...

This 1980's straight-to-video horror/comedy (I really don't know how to label it, to be a horror it should at least have some horror in it; to be a comedy, it should really contain some funny moments!) is everything you expect from the lowest end of movie production from a period when anyone with a camera could produce a film and get it distributed via the all new medium of home video.

The script is slow and jumpy, often moving from one main plot point to the next with little to no explanation (the ending even requires one of the actors to explain to the audience what just happened in case they missed it!), the acting is pretty terrible across the board and it seems that whoever was in charge of the boom used this film as an opportunity to feature it in every other scene! There is the typical helping of 80's video-crap nudity to try and titilate the, no doubt, bored audience but even the natural 80's breasts on show don't make this a watchable film (except perhaps for the lovely Marla Simon, in her only film role as The Knothole Girl). The one thing that perhaps pulls this movie out from the mire it otherwise finds itself in is that no-one in this film takes themselves, the script on any other aspect seriously, which does allow for an obvious tongue-in-cheek nod and wink to the audience, however even this self-aware jocularity wears thin very quickly and we're soon left hoping the characters start taking things seriously again just to get to the end of the film a little quicker.

Microwave Massacre is certainly not the sort of film you'll be able to pick up from your local video store (oops, came over all 80's there for a minute!) but if you ache for 80's video nonsense and an 'anyone can make a movie' attitude, then you might at least want to hunt this down for nostalgia values alone, otherwise I suggest living in blissful ignorance that the worst that can come out of a microwave is a Tesco Lasagne for one.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8579735117841988414.post-13428322791716152013-11-16T06:59:00.000-08:002013-11-16T06:59:52.608-08:00V/H/S

Harking back to the 70's and 80's anthology films (Creepshow, Amicus' Asylum etc), V/H/S is the story of a group of young troublemakers who make their way to a seemingly empty house to find and steal a video tape. On arrival at the house they discover a dead body surrounded by video tapes and 'snow' filled monitors and proceed to search through the pile of tapes and around the rest of the house to find the one tape they had been sent to find. As the rest of the group search the attic and basement, a few stay behind and play some of the tapes which we the audience then get to see the content of. The whole thing is shot Blair Witch-style with hand-held cameras and every story is therefore seen through the point-of-view of the camera holder. This oft-used technique has proved rather hit-or-miss of late and is one which has to be done very well to succeed otherwise it just leaves the viewer with a headache and motion sickness.

I came away from this film with some fairly mixed feelings. The framing story (the search for the allusive VHS tape) really serves no purpose than to allow the introduction to each of the mini-stories in between and wasn't all that scary or enjoyable as a stand-alone piece. The five mini-stories range from average to down-right terrifying and thoroughly enjoyable and are detailed as such below:

Amateur Night

The first tale of five concerns 3 friends who are planning to hit the town and bring back an unsuspecting woman to help them film their own porn film. One of the guys (the most reluctant of the three) is wearing a pair of glasses with a camera built into them (I like the fact that this is filmed at a time when glasses cams exist, but everything is still stored on VHS ... anyway) to capture the sordid event as it takes place. After visiting a few bars, they end up in a club where they pick up 2 girls; one loud and very drunk, the other very shy and quiet and take them back to their hotel room. They very soon realise that this was a big mistake and, as they always say about murderers on the news 'it's always the quiet ones you have to watch!'.

In my opinion, Amateur Night is the best of the five films. It's tense, pretty scary at times, beautifully acted (especially by the amazing Hannah Fierman) and has some moments of beautifully terrifying effects which will leave you shocked and amazed that the film's creators could create something so well made with what must have been a small budget. The major down side to this segment is that it's difficult to see any of the other sections matching up to this furious beginning and, sadly, for the most part, they don't.

Second Honeymoon

Second Honeymoon follows Sam and Stephanie as they travel on vacation, staying at a hotel at night and visiting sites during the day. In my opinion this was the weakest of the five stories. There are one or two creepy moments in the hotel room but other than that it falls pretty flat. Even the twist ending doesn't do much to save this vignette and will probably be quickly forgotten by most viewers.

Tuesday the 17th

A ridiculous title and an obvious nod to what is to come, as 4 young people (a jock, a geek, a sexy blonde and a quiet dark haired girl) head out to a remote spot in the woods to swim in the lake and get high. A tale is told of a killer who once lurked in the woods and was never caught and, slowly but surely, each of the teens are picked off one by one. This section is very much filmed in a tongue-in-cheek style and actually has a few decent gore effects but still falls fairly flat out of the pack.

The Sick Thing That Happened To Emily When She Was Younger

The fourth section of the movie and personally, my second favourite after Amateur Night. A young girl has a number of Skype conversations with her lover who lives in another State. She tells him that she is hearing strange noises during the night and thinks her apartment might be haunted. She has a strange lump in her arms and feels something under her skin. We watch as she Skype calls him each evening and takes him (and us) around her apartment as she hears strange noises.

This section was very much in the Paranormal Activity vein, with many of the same scare techniques, but despite its obvious nod to PA, it still works well. The Emily character is played beautifully by Helen Rogers and we feel her fear as she becomes more obsessed with the noises she hears.

I must admit that the only bit that lost me was the very end of the segment where the director has added a super-twist, but it was obviously over this reviewer's head. It only made sense after going away and reading about the scene and then re-watching. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who didn't get it, but on further reading, it suddenly becomes clear and is actually a clever ending.

10/31/98

That's the date of Halloween, for any non-American readers! 4 lads, in fancy dress (one with a NannyCam in his costume!?) go to a house for a Halloween party but somehow end up at the wrong address and stumble upon a Cult sacrifice.

This final segment begins a little slowly but very quickly all hell breaks loose and some terrifying and clever effects are used to show the arriving demons. Although this segment wasn't the best, its use of effects goes some way to redeeming it and allows the sections to end on a semi-high.

Overall, I would say that V/H/S really works because of 2 or 3 of the sections standing out and being far better than the rest of the film. As an idea, it's clever and interesting and must have been successful as V/H/S 2 followed soon after (not seen yet, but will watch and review shortly). Is it worth watching? I have to say yes, mainly for the Amateur Night and Emily sections which pull the film to a whole new level. As far as the overall production goes, as a low-budget indie production, it's one to put on the list for a dark night if you're after some good scares and some silly low budget bloodshed.

Grabbers is an Irish production, starring some well known faces (Richard Coyle, Russell Tovey) and concerns the arrival of some rather angry and blood-thirst sea creatures on the coast of a small Irish island. The Grabbers shoot long spiked tentacles at their prey, harpooning them and consuming their blood. Two local Garda (that's police to any of us non-Irish folk) must do battle against the invading Grabbers via the only means available ... getting the whole town very, very drunk!

Grabbers is very much in the Shaun of the Dead vein, relying on large helpings of humour to balance out the blood and decapitated heads and the (rather well done, considering its 4mil budget) CGI monsters. Whilst this isn't quite at a SotD level in terms of the final finished film, it works very well on all levels, intertwining a good script, with believable characters and a healthy dose of belly-laughs.

The assembled cast play a huge part in making this film the success it is (or surely will be with the cult following it is likely to garner) and are clearly enjoying their parts in its production. There are many recognisable faces (like the two mentioned above) and some lesser known but destined for greater things, such as Ruth Bradley (Garda Nolan).

Grabbers is an example of the sort of brilliant productions which can be made on these shores if the right money is available for investment, allowing acting and production talent to show their true potentials. Sadly it does seem that this movie (released last year (2012)) passed some of us by (myself included, I only heard about it recently, and that was only after stumbling upon it on Netflix whilst trying to find something half decent to fill an hour and a half) but if you get the opportunity, and enjoy your horrors in the Shaun/Black Sheep/World's End mould then this reviewer highly recommends you give this black comedy a go, just make sure you have a beer or two first though, to be on the safe side!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8579735117841988414.post-75193305997865517102013-11-06T01:58:00.000-08:002013-11-06T01:58:57.039-08:00Trashy Trailers #12
